Product name: piece dyed denim fabric
What's the difference between piece dyed and yarn dyed fabric? Is one better than the other?
·Yarn dyed means the yarns are dyed first, then woven or knitted
·Piece dyed means the fabric is woven or knitted using greige (undyed) yarns, then the fabric itself is dyed.
Contrary to what some think, neither yarn dyed or piece dyed is “better”, or of better quality, the choice depends mainly on the result you want to achieve. However, yarn dyed is more expensive, which may lead someone to think it is of better quality while, in fact, it just takes longer.
Yarn dyeing or piece dyeing has no impact on the quality or durability of the color since, in both case, the dye bath penetrate the yarn or fabric fully, at the fiber level, and each fiber is fully dyed.
In conclusion, for a fabric that has been produced with industrial processes, piece dyeing is better for uniform color. Yarn dyeing is not necessarily “better” but is the only viable solution to produce a good quality striped, checkered or jacquards fabrics, or any fabrics with motifs created by the yarns.
